The simple answer is that it can take up to a year to see the hoof horn grow out completely. There are many factors that can contribute to this process that can either promote growth or slow it down.
First, it’s important to understand how the hoof grows.
What is it made of and how does it grow?
The hoof is primarily made of keratin, a fibrous structural protein that provides strength and structure. It grows down from the coronary band and is a slow, continual biological process driven by cell activity.
On average, hooves can frow about 6mm to 12mm per month, and it can take up to 12 months for new growth to get from the coronary band to ground level.
What can contribute to growth rates?
There are a huge number of factors that can contribute to growth rates, and this can include;
- Nutrition – This is a critical factor as without the right nutrition, keratin linkages can become weak, or production of keratinised tissue can slow right down. Sub-factors such as digestion issues can also inhibit absorption and processing of essential nutrients.
- Environmental factors – Excess moisture or very dry conditions can cause hooves to become soft or brittle, including softening of the coronet band
- Exercise and movement – Blood flow to the hoof and surrounding structures is important to delivery essential nutrients for growth. Horses that are stabled may see slower growth rates.
- Genetic factors – Some breeds are naturally more inclined to suffer with poorer quality hooves
- Diseases and injuries – There are several conditions that can affect hoof growth rates. Damage to the coronary band can also impede normal growth
Supplementation
Supplements like the Better 4 Hooves Supplement can support by providing key nutrients such as biotin (vitamin B7), zinc, copper, methionine, lysine and omega fatty acids. Whilst horses will get some of these nutrients from other sources such as forage and hard feed, supplementing will ensure that they are getting what they need to grow strong and healthy hooves.
Although total growth can’t be rushed, noticeable changes to hoof hardness and comfort can be seen within a few months.
David Newall, DWCF says “I've used Better 4 Hooves with my clients for some time & I have to say I've noticed good results. In particular a couple of cases where previous supplements have been tried & not worked, but Better 4 Hooves has made a difference. This could be down to the research that's been put in in regards to the quantities of each individual nutrient. I noticed an improved growth rate but the horn quality also improved. I highly recommend Better 4 Hooves.”
