It would be a lot easier if our horses could talk to us, but unfortunately that’s not the case! The good news is by paying attention to their health and behaviour, we can often work out if they might be lacking in something in their diet.
Why might my horse need supplementation?
Before we get into what signs you might see that your horse needs a supplement, it’s important to establish the why. Even with access to grass and forage, nutritional gaps can happen for a variety of reasons. Some common reasons horses might benefit from supplementation include;
- Limited grazing or poor-quality pasture
- Increased workload or intense training
- Digestive issues such as faecal water syndrome, hindgut dysbiosis or ulcers
- Age-related issues
- Seasonal factors and temperature extremes
- Genetic predisposition for weak hooves
What signs might indicate if my horse needs a hoof supplement?
The following signs are the most seen in horses that are lacking in hoof-specific nutrition;
- Dull skin and coat
- Weak, brittle and cracking hooves
- Infections like thrush, abscesses or white line disease
- Slow growth rate
- Discomfort in the hoof or lameness
- Uneven wear
- Visual inconsistencies in the horn e.g. ridges
It’s important to note that other signs may come up alongside poor hoof health, that could indicate a wider nutrient deficiency. These signs include;
- Lethargy or unwillingness to work
- Weight fluctuations
- Hyperactivity and spookiness
- Abnormal stools
- Muscle wastage or uneven musculature
- Slow healing wounds
- Stiffness or uneven gait
What can I do about it?
If you suspect a nutrient deficiency, it may be worth a conversation with your farrier or your vet for further investigation.
