Biotin, also known as Vitamin B7, is required for many enzymatic functions within the body, including those that are involved in building strong and healthy hooves. They can obtain this vitamin from the diet and by absorbing it from the microbes that produce it in the digestive tract.
Why is it important in hoof health?
Biotin is essential for the enzymatic reactions that metabolise amino acids. These amino acids are the components that link together and form keratin proteins, which make up the majority of the hoof. Without adequate biotin, the body can’t synthesise keratin efficiently which can lead to slower production of keratin or weaker keratin structures. This can have an impact on hoof health and growth.
Are there any indicators of biotin deficiency?
Whilst true biotin deficiency is not extremely common, some horses may not get enough through their diet or by hindgut synthesis. Signs of deficiency can range, but the most common ones are;
• Dry, cracked or brittle hooves
• Losing shoes regularly
• Sensitivity in the hoof
• Dry, dull coat
• Slow hoof growth
It’s important to note that some factors can contribute to low biotin levels, even if you feed good quality forage. These can include digestive imbalances, stress and age-related digestive factors.
How much should I feed?
At least 20mg a day is recommended to support healthy hooves. It’s also important to note that biotin should be in balance with minerals such as zinc and copper to promote keratin synthesis. Amino acids such as lysine and methionine will also support keratin synthesis. A good quality hoof supplement should contain vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fatty acids.
Our Better 4 Hooves Supplement contains an amazing 35mg of biotin per serving alongside specially selected minerals, amino acids and fatty acids.
Ricky Gache, DIPWCF ATF says “Extremely impressed with the rate of growth and the high quality of horn produced, every horse that is on it has responded in this way, Very Impressed!! I will continue to use and recommend this product to all horse owners"
How long will it take to notice changes?
It may take several months to notice changes in hoof health when supplementing with biotin. The vitamin will support formation of new keratin proteins, supporting new hoof growth from the coronary brand. Total horn replacement can take anywhere from 8-12 months, but you may see other signs like improved hardness and reduced sole sensitivity.
In summary, whilst horses can synthesise biotin in the hindgut, many of them benefit from additional biotin supplementation in the diet. Biotin is essential for healthy hooves as well as skin and coat quality, nutrient metabolism and nerve function.
